About
“A passion for supporting people to move more and reduce pain, giving them a full and active life. I am here to make you feel better”.
Why did you decide to train as a Sports Rehabilitator?
After 20+ years of working in the Health and Fitness industries, I began to look at new and exciting opportunities. I wanted to build on my wealth of experience and further develop my knowledge, so I decided I’d like to specialise in musculoskeletal conditions which is exactly what a Sports Rehabilitator is all about.
Where did you do your training and what did it entail?
Melissa Taylor (BSc, MSc, GSR)
Physical Activity Specialist
I then trained at Bolton University which was a totally different experience to my young student days in Lancaster. Living at home, with a family, a mortgage and a part time job, my 2 year MSc in Sports Rehabilitation was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done but I loved every minute and I’m proud to say I graduated with Distinction. The course had a real focus on anatomy and physiology, building on my previous degree but in much more depth. I find anatomy and physiology of the human body fascinating and I love how it all connects, so to be able to apply this to the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of musculoskeletal issues was perfect for me. The course also included lots of hands on, in a clinical setting, mastering numerous assessment, treatment and management techniques used in manual therapy.
What has your career been like so far?
I have always loved working with those who are sedentary, taking their first tentative steps to becoming more active and I have also developed a special interest in working with patients with long term health conditions or a disability.
My remit has included supporting stroke, cancer and cardiac patients as well as sessions for neurological disorders such as Parkinsons Disease and Multiple Sclerosis.
My clinical work has included pitch side therapy for rugby, private clinical practice and work with the England Amputee Football Team. I am currently a team therapist for Bolton RUFC which includes pre-season training and injury prevention as well as treatment and rehabilitation to get players fit for play.
What do you do when you’re not working?
I love the outdoors and feel very lucky to live in a beautiful part of the world with countryside on our doorstep. I’m always up for exploring new paths either walking or running and I have been known to take on the odd running challenge in the name of charity. Family time is special to me and I feel very fortunate to share a love of music with my folks at home. Music is great as it helps me switch off. All my family play in a brass band so if I’m not working or walking you’ll probably find me rehearsing, performing or enjoying the odd well-earned drink with my brass band buddies.
